Shattered Angles-Student Work

I've been on the road a fair bit so far this year and have taught my Shattered Angles design a number of times. I'm always amazed at the wonderful work that my students produce, its great to get pictures!

Marvella in Haliburton, Ontario finished her quilt for a raffle at the Princess Margaret Cancer Research Foundation in Toronto. Its a little hard to see, but the centre panel has a forest of tress and Marvella appliqued some deer near the bottom of the panel.

Bobbie in North Dakota played around with cutting her strips at different angles and got a delightfully quirky design. I love the border fabric she chose!

Vel on Mayne Island chose a beautiful setting to photograph her quilts, don't you just love the view? She also has her Gingko Table Runner that she designed in my Give & Take Applique class, its such a lovely layout setting!

To celebrate all these wonderful quilts I'm offering 20% off all my books for the month of July. You can order them here: http://fabricimagery.com/category/books/ and type in JULY20 before you check out. Thanks for all the great inspiration!

More Shattered Angles

Last week I spent two lovely days on Mayne Island with the Quilt Guild. The weather was typical west coast (meaning it was raining with brief interruptions of raining really hard)! But there was lots of action in the Agriculture Hall when 16 dedicated quilters took my Shattered Angles class one day and my Give & Take Applique class the following day.
Great fun was had by all, especially me!

Quilters are gathered around the Shattered Angles blocks they made. Such a bright assortment of colours!

Creativity abounds when the quilters learn how to make Give & Take Applique blocks.
Thanks for such a wonderful trip!

A Week of Notan - Day 1

This week, I'm showing you a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark as they are placed next to the other in art and imagery.
Nōtan is traditionally presented in paint, ink, or cut paper, but it is relevant to a host of modern day image-making techniques, such as stamping, applique and screen printing. I've used Notan in my Give & Take Applique technique shown as my quilt Ball Joints:

Here is a piece that I created using black construction paper and scissors:

If you want to look for some references in books, try these:
  • Composition: A Series of Exercises in Art Structure for the Use of Students and Teachers by Arthur Wesley Dow (1899)
  • Notan: A Virtual Art Academy building block by Barry John Raybould, MA (2004/2010) Course on Notan
  • Notan: The Dark-Light Principle of Design by Dorr Bothwell and Marlys Mayfield (1968/1991)
This blog has some excellent work that was drawn by a high school art class: http://notandrawing.blogspot.ca/

Tomorrow I have other pictures and some tips to get you started.

Design Ideas

I spent the day in Old Montreal last weekend and looked around at the buildings for some design inspiration. Here`s some photos I took:

I think some of the cutouts could be good Give and Take Applique Designs.

Curves and swags are perfect quilting designs.

These carvings are great designs for applique in the setting triangles in a quilt with on point blocks.

My favourite: an Art Deco design with ferns and a centred rosette. What ideas can you come up withÉ

Even More Give and Take Applique!

We had so much fun in Creston with the Give and Take Applique I wanted to share more pictures! As a teacher, it is so exciting to see what designs inspiration my students can come up with and they really exploded with this concept of positive/negative designs.

Ruth created a paper cut design for her wall hanging and had fun with a variety of red fabrics.

Syd pieced some of the applique fabrics to add even more interest to her piece and has a variety of layout options to consider. I really like the way she has turned the blocks so the orientation changes.

Thanks to a wonderful group of ladies who made me feel so welcome, shared with creativity and had such a good time!
See you at Quilt Canada, I hope!

More Give and Take Applique!

Here are some more pictures of the ladies in Creston and their work on Give and Take Applique. What a difference in their work when they have two days for designs and creation. No one was rushed and they were able to create some very exciting designs. Great job, everyone!

Brigitte used a Hawaiian style design in batiks for her piece, I could see this design in a lovely bed size quilt as well!

Connie played with a more ornate design and I love what is happening in the centre where the blocks meet.

Donna has some wonderful designs that could be used in so many different ways and she has a wonderful use of detail in these designs.

Joanne was inspired by a sketch of a quilting design to create this unique  arrangement. We had lots of fun trying out different layout possibilities!

Linda used a circlular design for her work and I'm really looking forward to see what she develops with this!

More tomorrow!

Give and Take Applique

Again in Creston with a wonderful group of ladies who jumped in with both feet and came up with excting designs using my Give and Take Applique technique. See my patterns at http://www.patchworkstudio.com/

Give and Take Applique uses both the positive and negative of any designs and when the blocks are placed in different arrangmenets, exciting things take place!

Here are some of my students work, they really took the concept and ran with it!

Ruth let me take a picture of her belt, it's another possible design idea!
More tomorrow!
