August Blog Give Away

We are ready for our third blog giveaway this week. It was fun reading about your first surface design technique....isn't life a tickle!
This week the give away is a fat quarter of some fabulous white PFD fabric. I love, love, love the hand of this fabric, it is soft and drapey and takes colour beautifully! You can order it from me by the metre (approx. 39") at:                                                         The stencil I've included is from ArtistCellar, they create a whole range of awesome designs. You can see more here: http://fabricimagery.com/category/stencils/ Keep checking through to the second page, there are more terrific designs!
To win this prize I want to hear what colours you would apply to the fat quarter with dye or paint and then what you would do with the stencil! That's it! Winner will be announced on Friday!

Wow! There are many choices here... my first thought was to dye the fabric in autumn colors... oranges, golds, browns, then use metallic fabrics to stencil the design. But I can also see dyeing with light blues, and using several green fabric paints to stencil the design.

Lots of options here. Such fun to think about this challenge. The stencil evokes the feeling of leaves or a school of fish. So I'd shibori dye the fabric in blues to get that feeling of movement. After the fabric came out of the bath, I'd have a look at it's lines. I'd either choose colours evocative of leaves or of fish to use with the lovely stencil. My choice would be intuitive and dependent on the shibori dyed fat quarter.

I'd like to know more about the fabric--I've used a couple of different PFD fabrics, and do like to compare them. ie who from, and name of this line.

or is it the treasure gifted to you, so you really don't know its origins?

if I got the fat quarter and stencil, I'd go for my favourite colours: brown on mustard yellow, in the spirit of fall. with probably a touch of contrast, sharper yellow? purple? I'd have to play with this!

I would put pink and purple on the fabric and I would use the stencil to make a scarf.

Like Katie, I'd be interested to know the name of the pfd that you like. It looks like you left a space for a URL, but then didn't put it in. I looked around on your website, as it sounds like you sell yardage, but couldn't find it. Thanks!

My first thoughts on the materials presented are to dye the fabric in yellows and golds and use the stencil on that piece using paint in greens through browns. It's a very cute stencil.

Oh the possibilities!!! I would first use the stencil with some Color Magnet and then drop it in some Cobalt blue dye. Then I take some resist and apply it through the stencil. Into a navy dye bath it goes. Finally, I would then use textile paint in Autumn colors and the stencil once again for a moody fall evening piece of cloth. (Now I really want to get out some cloth!LOL!)

I'm having a sixties throw back at the moment, I'd love to use burnt orange and brown, with some shocking pink highlights!!!

Hi all,
First I want to apologize about not answering your questions earlier or telling you who the winner was. I've been in Tacoma at the APWQ show!
Anyway, the PFD is one that I order from a Canadian Distributor, it's not the fabric that I received as a gift!
This one is a lovely soft fine, tight weave. I meant to have it up on the website for ordering by now.... but I can send a sample to whoever might like to try it out.

As for the winner, all your suggestions sound absolutely luscious!
the winner that my "colour deficient" husband chose is Jeannie, who said: I would first use the stencil with some Color Magnet and then drop it in some Cobalt blue dye. Finally, I would then use textile paint in Autumn colors and the stencil once again for a moody fall evening piece of cloth.
So, Jeannie, email me at susanpm@shaw.ca with your address and I can pop your prize in the mail to you! We all expect to see the fat quarter finished to show us!
